50 champion brake problem revisited

I'm still trying to solve the draging noise in my left front brake. I replaced the return spring with a new one and was going to replace the eccentric spring clips, but they sent the wrong size. Also, both right and left spindles have what appears to be manufactured grooves on the taper. Is this normal?

The drag is on braking only, once per revolution.
The shoes are fairly new, 1500 mi., and didn't make the noise until about 600-800 mi.

My next plan is to take a gel ballpin and cross hatch both shoes, drive, and brake,the car to see if the wear is even.

These pictures are the best I can do, take a look and see if you can see anything I'm missing.

In photo #3 it sort of looks like the brake shoe is making contact on the end and not towards the center. If this is the case that is why it probably rubs. The shoe is not the same contour as the drum in this case and must be removed and taken to a brake shop and arced to fit the drum contour. Take the shoes off and see how they conform to the drum by laying the shoe in the drum on each side, if you see a gap in the middle and good contact on the ends then that is your problem.When arcing shoes they must be kept with each drum as the drums may not be the same circumference.Hope this helps.If it rubs once per revolution the drum is out of round.

What I think you're seeing is the bevel at the end of the shoe. There is one on each end of both shoes.

Dick,

A couple of thoughts on this. If the drums were turned is there a possibilty that they could have been cut with the drum off center? You could have a perfectly round drum that might not center on the axle which would cause it to act as if it were not running true. Also, if the arc of the shoes does not match the drum it would not be making uniform contact around the perimeter of the drum.

Dick I can see the bevel clearly in photo #3 but looking at the darker part of the lining indicates to me that this is where the contact patch is. I've been dealing with things like this for 40 years in my just ended career and still think that it looks like not enough heel/toe clearance but without being there to see it in person I could be wrong.

I had the drum turned because of the problem, and the problem is still there. I guess it could still be out of round if it wasn't turned concentric or square to the bearing hub. I just placed the loose shoes in the drum and they seem to fit very good with no "rocking". If the drum was out of round or not concentric to the hub wouldn't I feel it in the brake pedal?

If the hub and drum was turned as unit it should be concentric but if they are not chucked up in the lathe properly they could still be crooked, I've had it happen quite a few times Dick. If there is no rocking of the shoes when you lay them in the drum they should be ok.you should be able to see a little clearance on both ends of shoe.
When in doubt have the shop put it in the lathe again and check it.

Before I reinstalled the shoes I marked them as I said I was going to. I drove the car about three miles and braked from about 50 mph down to about ten mph at least three times. No noise! I've had this drum off maybe six or seven times but this is the first time I've had the shoes off and reinstalled them. When I installed them this time I noticed that the front shoe didn't seem to be seated in the wheel cyl. quite right. The drum didn't seem to fit either. (I use a cyl. clamp and they're always in the way.) I tapped the shoe down, installed the drum, pumped the brakes a couple of times and checked to make sure the wheel moved freely.

There is still a slight noise if you listen carefully, but I'll bet it will wear in. By the way, ALL the cross hatching I put on the shoes was gone. I'll be back if the noise comes back

Great Dick, hope that fixed it permanently, if the shoes are adjusted properly there will always be a slight drag and a chance of some accompanying noise.

Yes, I do have castellated nuts that allow 1/16 turn adjustment. The front shoe is the shoe that has the auto-adj. And, yes, the rear shoe
should have about 1 1/2" less surface at the top than the primary shoe. I guess I could remore that excess but everything appears to be working at this point. This is the way they come when you buy replacements, at least mine did. The grease catcher plate does not show any sign of rubbing/wear.
The wheel cylinder only appears in the picture to be at 2:00. It is parallel to the floor.
