HELP!! This a "thrust block"? How 2 reinstall it??

  • HELP!! This a "thrust block"? How 2 reinstall it??

    I have heard that these things called thrust blocks "fall out" when
    you pull an axle ... this came out on the end of my old axle ... is
    this a thrust block? I was expecting something different.

      Oh ... you are a funny guy!!! I have been trying a telescoping deal
      with a magnet on the end .... but it keeps sticking to the side when
      I get it down there. DO TELL .. how DO you get it back in??????

        It's only 1 AM.
        Here's how I do it. Get a length of gas or brake line tubing and run a wire through the center. Stick the thrust block over the wire sticking out of the line. Put a dab of grease on the block tip and thread it down the axle tube, inserting in the hole. (flashlight helps) Hold it in place with the tubing, pull the wire out, then the tubing.

          I checked back a couple of times, then went out and continued on the
          path I was going. I wasnt able to get it into the hole in the back,
          so I took a file and carefully removed the burr around the outside of
          the small end - making a slight chamfer. Then I gobbed some axle lube
          on the small end, and then stuck it on the telescoping magnet. I fed
          it down the axle tube, with a small flashlight inside the tube end. I
          got it into the hole, and then stuck a long plastic rod (so it would
          not get stuck to the magnet) and pushed it all the way into the hole.
          Then I held the plastic against the thrust block, and pulled the end
          of the magnet way. This works nicely if you didnt take both axles out
          of the rear end (like me). Then I packed the bearing and stuck it all
          back together. Thanks for the response though, someone doing a search
          will certainly appreciate both our solutions.

            Hello all, I pulled both my axles and did not have the thrust block come out as far as I know. Do they always come out? Is it possible that they did and are laying in the axle tube? It is a Dana 44 non posi..Thanks!!

              Only the Twin Traction (limited slip, posi, whatever) axles have the thrust blocks.

                Thanks Nate... Is it possible to convert this axle to posi without the thrust blocks, or would that be part of the conversion? Thanks

                  There are a few aftermarket limited slips available for the Dana 44.

                    This is true but be careful, most of them have different spline counts than the Studebaker axles. I don't know what the Stude axles are, but most of the aftermarket ones will have higher spline counts.

                    IMHO the most cost effective way to put a limited slip under a Stude is just to buy a used Stude axle assembly with a limited slip already in it.

                    What I would like to know is if one used one of these aftermarket limited slips, and then bought a set of the Moser axles from Fairborn, could you just have the axles made with, say, 35 splines to match the modern limited slip? That would make a really "stealth" yet high strength axle assembly. I keep meaning to ask Phil or Malcolm when I run into them at meets but always end up talking about stuff important to getting my car back together for some reason instead.

                      Some of the aftermarket Posis meant for pre 72 or 73 Jeeps are available in 19 spline versions for the Dana 44

                        I made a tool out of a broomstick with recess in one end for the thrust block--it stays in place with a bit of grease.

                        Piece of cake.

                          Nate, sorry but you can't go with later posi section. More splines mean larger diameter axle, also means larger carrier bearings won't fit in the bearing saddles. Randys Ring and Pinion or Mosier should be able to fix you up with a posi carrier siutable for the 19 spline axles. Lou Cote[8D]
