  • Bed Size

I have a small problem -- maybe. The 53 R5 C-cab I bought seems to have a bed that is ab out 2 inches smaller than the gate I bought to go on it. I measure the inside of the bed as 48 1/4 inches. As I look at the bed against the cab it seems to be inside the indentation of the bed.
Anyone have the real bed diminsions? My gate measures 51 inches and simply will not fit in the bed frame. Were there 2 different sizes of beds??? [:0]
Before checking the gate I had a 16 gauge steel bed turned for it so I am well into a big cost for this bed to be wrong.
    Any info would help.

I believe you have the correct size bed for the year of the truck. They changed width somewhere around '54 or'55 to a slightly wider bed. My '57 Transtar deluxe has a bed that matches the 51 inch width you say you have for the tailgate. Appears you just have a later version tailgate.

      The bed width of C-cabs was 48 1/2" from 1949 through 1955. 51" from 1956 onward.

Is yours a reproduction tailgate? I've wondered whether the reproduced ones are being made for both widths.

Ah, thanks for that link, Transtar60. And I see their meaurements for the tailgates are 48 7/8" and 51 7/8". So, that '56 and later bed is exactly 3 inches wider.

Thanks for the information and links. I do have a 48 inch bed and the gate I bought is 51 inches so I will have to find the right sized gate. It's not a repo -- I found this one thru a friend in Texas. I may go find another gate that has the STUDEBAKER words in it but otherwise is junk and make it over to fit my bed. I certainly don't want to cut this one up since it's in relatively good shape.
