  • Caddy test fit

    I could not wait for N8 to help, so I did a test fit of the 425 cu.in. Cadillac engine into my 58 Scotsman by myself. No major issues anywhere, I just need to make a couple of flat plates for the front mount, make a rear X member for the trans mount and tweak the alignment. I'll flip the mounts over to drop the engine another inch.

        The truck had AC added on the bix six, so I'll keep it. I used the Vintage Air bracket for the Sanden compressor and mounted a idler on the old Caddy PS mount. BTW, the truck is a 59, not a 58.

          Looks right at home there [8D].

          It's a good thing the Studebaker motor was big (dimensionally). It resulted in rather large engine compartments which now gives us a lot of choices if want to repower with a brand X motor (not that I'm recommending that in any way, shape or form or course [}])

            Back in South Bend, the earlier Caddy's were the swap of choice, almost a bolt it. I was not so sure about the 425,472, 500 cu.in series. They are dirt cheap in the bone yards, I paid $510 for the 60,000 mile engine/TH 400 combo. I would have saved the big six, but it need everything including a new head and would have cost more then the Caddy swap to rebuild. BTW, I'm doing nothing in the way of cutting on the truck so it could be brought back to stock some day, but with custom paint, wheels and interior on the truck now, it would be a major deal anyway.

              OK, first swap issue. It seems the 425-500 Cu.In Caddy is a 1 1/2 longer in then the early Cadillac engine swap I did back in the late 50's. The engine fits fine side to side but would have caused fan issues unless I could move it back a bit. A couple of small dents in the firewall behind the head and eliminating the fan clutch seems to have fixed it, stay tuned. On a car, I think it would be less of a issue. The engine is now bolted down on new front mounts, I'll work on the rear mount next.
