I believe the 100% correct alternator is an ALE-5003. not sure what you have and what is different about it.

I purchased a solid state regulator from Dave Thibeault (see TW advertisement). He install solid state regulator inside the original Prestolite regulator box so it looks original for shows. It has worked flawlessly since installation and I noticed a much steadier amperage output on my dash gauge.

I also have the Dave Tbow solid state regulator on my 63 Avanti,I find the battery stays fully charged.
The orignal type never seemed to charge the battery full charge.

I have a pretolite 5014-10F alternator on a R 2 that I just started working on. The regulator has been by passed.
Does anyone know if the 5014 has an internal regulator?

I replaced my regulator on my R3453 Avanti twice before changing the Alternator to include an internal regulator. Check out Bob's Studebaker Resouce web site and look at the Avanti Regulator Replacement info. The recommended Remy 14341 is a good fit and provides a little more juice for additional electrical needs you may add. I gutted the old regulator to hide the fuse and battery connections. Leaving the old regulator shell retains the stock look. Enjoy your ride.
