  • Champion 1950 engine overhaul

    Or I might call it a redo-completion of a 1950 Champion engine.

Recently had done what I thought was a complete engine overhaul but after breaking in the new rings and obtaining good compression and vacuum, oil was being burned and smoke was impossible to live with.

So now the engine is out of the car at the macninest, and we discover that the lifters have a great deal of play. We are trying to obtain oversided lifters so they make a nice fit when those bores are drilled just right for their size.

    Has anyone had this experience?

The machinest says the lifters were worn about 15/1000 from the portion that had no wear.

Also, I am boring out the cylinders 30 thousenths, a middle choice of more power etc.

Anyone have any warnings for me or advise, would be much appreciated.

I finally want to be able to put this on the road and Go Go Go anywhere for thousands of miles to anywhere in the U.S.

Are the lifters worn or is it the block? I'd be very cautious about boring the block for larger lifters. I would check and see what a new set of tappets (lifters) measure before doing anything. Chuck Collins has standard and 10 (.001) thousandths over and Kanter Auto Parts in NJ have standard. I too bored my block 30 over, it was the smallest I could go with the wear I had.

exactly. We are going to decide if the block or tappets are worn. I believe that just measuring the lifters, they were 15/1000 worn.

Will let you know what final measurements reveal.
