  • Would like to drive at night

need input.turn signals they work great untill headlights are turned on.Took out old headlight switch cleaned greased reassembled worked good for short time then same thing. The drivers side works but passenger side is the real trouble. Am I on the right link in lighting? Orderd new switch in hopes that is the problem.Car is a 55 commander 6volt all lights are working and bright untill headlights are turned on.

Ok I'll do that. But wouldn't that show up in other lighing uses.Car sat along time like most have. So when it was brought back to life sockets were cleaned and greased, eletc grese.I did not loosen an retighten mounting screws or bolts with one exception right rear that was weak add extea ground wire at that cornner. So its my understanding body is ground so clean all contacts between body and light mounts?

yes and I would also check and make sure that the ground strap around the pass side motor mount is present and clean. I may be way off base but grounding would explain why stuff would stop working well when headlights on...

Thank you so very much I have heard alot of the importance of grounding but assumed I was ok with everthing lit up.Ground strap you mentioned is there looks like it could use good cleaning. Are there any straps form body to frame? Or do bolts serve this function? Anyhow what a great resorce this forum is and thank all of you who share there knowledge. Thanks again I'll let you know what happens.

not sure if there are any from body to frame, first I would clean and/or replace the engine ground strap and if you still have problems just try manually grounding the headlight buckets with test leads and see if that solves your problem. If not post back...

No body to frame straps or wires were original. Wouldn't hurt to add some. Most problems I've had with lighting grounds were cured by tightening the screws on the headlight buckets or tailight housings.
If that makes the issue disappear, a larger gauge screw or star washer will provide long term relief.

Not directly relevant to the original post but.....

The MOST important ground on a '56-'64 HAWK.... is the strap on the OIL-PRESSURE GAUGE LINE that grounds the pressure line to the firewall.
This IS the ground for all the dash gauges.
Of course... I always add several ground straps to the gauges and the dash to supplement the pressure line.
