Lubing the hood release cable

I was wondering what's the best stuff to lubricate the hood release cable. Should I use light machine oil?

There is such a thing as cable lubricant available at most auto parts stores. It comes in a tube. I think that its basically a mix of graphite, penetrating oil and kerosene.
