  • Fuel System: new Summit Carb 500 cfm -- adapter plate Fitment on V8 intake manifold

Just bought the new carb from Summit----with the spread bore adapter place with hideaway bolts for mounting on the intake manifold
and new bolt -on studs to attached the carb to the adapter plate----- well I discovered that the casting of the intake manifold casting wont allow
the bolt -on studs for the adapter plate to carb marriage to occur..... Has anyone done a work around---- like a threat tap into the carb mount holes to accept
the mount studs WITHOUT having to bolt them on -----casting is in the way of bolt attachment under the adapter plate.... Can the intake be machined little ?
anybody out there ever do this ???? thanks so much

New "Summit 500 cfm Carb." ??

This sounds like you are trying to fit possibly a Edelbrock AFB size Carb. on a WCFB Manifold ?
Why not get the correct AFB size modified Manifold and have no issues ?

Hard to understand what you are talking about. Pics would help, or at least the Summit part numbers for the carb and manifold adapter.

Yes, pics of the manifold, carb bottom, and top & bottom of this adapter are required for us to understand what you are asking.

If you are using a '58 to '62 WCFB 4bbl intake the only holes you can use are the narrow 4 holes on the intake.
Your adapter plate (and there are several types and styles of adapter plates) should have the primary throttle bore holes tapered to go from the AFB on top to the WCFB on the bottom. The same goes for the secondary holes. Your mount studs should go right through the carb flange, the adapter plate, and into the intake. If you try to bolt the adapter to the manifold and then bolt the carb to the adapter, you would have to run the outer bolts up from the bottom before bolting the adapter to the intake manifold. Some adapter plates have a countersunk hex recess to allow this... BTDT, but that is a wonky way to do it.
Kind of hard to advise not knowing what adapter plate you are using, with your Edelbrock carb. The above info will work for a 500cfm and a 600cfm AFB, but the 750cfm would take a different adapter plate (and most Stude's can't handle a 750cfm carb).
Or.. You could get an AFB ready cast iron Stude V8 AFB conversion intake manifold from Studebaker International that is prepped from NOS 2bbl cores for around $200 (You are already almost 30% of the way there with the cost of an adapter plate).
Just some stuff to think about..

As Jeff suggests, there are much easier ways to fit that carb to a different Stude manifold and much easier carbs to fit to your existing manifold, so the question arises, what advantage are you hoping to gain which led you to choose that carburetor?
