  • Transmission / Overdrive: 56 Golden Hawk Ultramatic Automatic transmission

I have been working on my brothers 56 Golden Hawk and we had the trans rebuilt. However the shop can not get it to upshift or downshift. The shop even took it apart a second time and still can not get it to upshift or downshift. The shop has given up and told me to just drive it in the high range. I have been driving it in high range for about 6months now and it seems to drive fine, it just does not shift! Please advise!

Uh.. I think you need to find a better shop.

Ross may be able to share some insight.

First guess would be that the governor/ park gear assy is not indexed to the planetary output shaft correctly so the oil ports for the governor are not talking with each other. There is supposed to be a roll pin in the end of the shaft to insure correct indexing but violence + stupidity can overcome it.

First action would be to do the governor pressure test as outlined in the service manual. If there is zero governor pressure then the park gear assy is most likely.

If you have good governor pressures, then the problem is probably something assembled wrong in the rear upper valve body where the shift valves are located.

Without the direct drive functioning you are missing a lot of performance and even more economy as you busily generate a whole lot of heat.
