  • Electrical: GT Hawk, Studebaker Avanti

Can someone explain why a 63-64 GT Hawk has a 35 amp Prestolite Alternator, but Avantis of the same years have a 40 amp unit?? Why do Avantis need the additional 5 ampere output??

Either Studebaker figured the Avanti would have a higher potential electrical load (maybe most had AC?) ; or, they got a good deal on 40 amp units when they were building Avanti's.

The max capacity of the alternator simply means that, that alternator can sustain a load of that capacity if so needed. That's it! You can install a 110 amp capacity alternator even if your max load could only be 20 amps and it wouldn't make any difference.

This pretty much describes my Hawk. I have a 110 amp capacity alternator and have reduced any potenial load to where I could likely get away with a 20 amp one (if you could find such a thing).

Avantis had the option of power windows which were not available on Larks and Hawks.

Brad are you saying that this why Studebaker equipped all Avantis with a 40 amp, should a car be built with power windows??

Addendum...........apparently R1 and R2 Hawks and Larks were equipped with 40 amp alternators, why if they did not have power windows???

What others above have said, plus: The Avanti was Studebaker's top-of-the-line automobile, so got the best hardware, including a 40 amp alternator.

Hawks and Larks with Avanti engines naturally included the 40-amp alternator, because it came with the engine.

So one could utilize a 35 amp unit on an Avanti (no p/w) suffering no deleterious effects??
