  • Ignition: 289 timing

I need to check timing on my 1960 Hawk but can’t locate pointer. Which side of the engine is it on ?

Left side, driver's side down next to crankshaft pulley.

Thank you so much for the pic. I assume pointer should be at mark next to ign. Motor idles very rough and want to check timing before going further. Rebuilt car new plugs and wires. Car has generator and electronic ignition and I have been told that
that might be a issue but I also have a 1940 Lasalle with that setup and it runs great. Click image for larger version

make sure vacuum advance is disconnected and idle speed is correct when setting initial timing.

Beautiful car. The rough idle issue is a common indicator of valve adjustment issues. The solid lifters need periodic manual adjustment. A minor PIA but well worth the effort. I would check on that ASAP in order to save you some possible frustration down the line. Take care and keep us up to date.

You can also static time, set the pointer in the "I" in the IGN and adjust the points to just open with the slightest movement. "I" is exactly 4 degrees advance.

Would the rotor not indicate when number one is about to fire?

If I rotate crank until mark lines up with point and turn distributor until bug is just beginning to touch number one on compression stroke will that work. The PS pump hides everything pretty well. First motor I have ever timed where pointer was so hard to see
