  • Other: Studbaker mechanic needed

    Hi All,

I live in the North Bay Area in California and need expert help with getting my '55 President Speedster running. Does anyone know of a mechanic in my area? San Rafael is the closest large town.

Also, is there an electronic ignition available for the V8?

FWIW, the Studebaker V8 is tractor-simple and any competent old car mechanic should be able to get it running.

If it's been sitting a long while, to start and run reliably, it will need new spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condensor. CASOs always try to argue this, but more than sixty years of experience, I'll no longer touch a Stude with old unknown age ignition parts on it.

And yes, there are Chinese electronic ignitions available. Pertronix makes a kit for the stock distributor and the internet has several sources for new aluminum distributors.

Eric, join the Sequoia Chapter. We have members in North Bay that can help.

Thanks, Topper; I found a reference to the Sequoia Chapter in Facebook via the SBDC Chapters page. Is that the correct site?

        Agree with what Jack said.
The Studebaker is like most 50's cars...that is, very simple. there are no fancy, or oddball things in tuning, preparation for the initial engine start.

Just a "competent" mechanical guy (or girl) should be able to help you.

You might want to try Anthony Trujillo. He own Golden Era. He’s a mobile mechanic who also sells parts. He handles the Bay Area and beyond. He posts on Studebaker Addicts on Facebook. PM me if you want his phone number. Justin

              Yep that's the one !

I second Studebaker west. Carl and Herman know Studebaker's WELL as well as anybody in the area who could help you out, if they're too busy; they're great guys.

Carl and Herman have the shop closed and are in Dubuque. Probably won’t be back to Redwood City for another week.
