  • Interior: 63’ Avanti Carpet installation Sequence

I have received a new replacement carpet set from Newark and I’ve tried researching , emailing , forum research etc. to determine the order of installation of the carpet pieces, with limited help. My original carpet was practically non existent when I purchased the car so I have little to go by other than a few online pictures of other cars. I have included a picture of the Newark carpet set and I’ve numbered the sequence of installation (my best interpretation) but does t seem correct ? I know raw edges are covered, for example under the sill plate, but what I need to know is what are the correct overlaps. Any input is appreciated..

The firewall first. Then the Rear, then Front, as the front overlaps the rear at the door jamb. Then the console sides, and then the rear seat riser as those pieces overlap the floor pieces when installed. The kick panels last, then you can reinstall the sill plates. The console front side pieces can be installed any time, but you might want to make sure they line up with the lower console pieces so there are no gaps.

Curious, were you aware that Mike Baker has Avanti carpet with the original color combos patterns and fit? Amazing in that its 100% like that coming direct from Studebaker during production.

The original Avanti carpet was lousy. The nap flattened out in a few years and turned brown (black carpet). Why would anyone want that?

Thank you, I’m not aware of Mike Baker.. I have the Newark carpet set.I’m about ready to install. It looks pretty decent to me .. I just need to determine the order of installation.

Why Dwight???????????? because they are as car as close to what the factory produced as possible!............Do you really think Pilot will subject his Avanti to daily use conscription???.............I think not, and that carpet from Mike Baker will out live Pilot, and coincidentally, you and I!.........and most likely that carpet will be covered with the proper rubber mats from that fellow from Va, Dave Kinney.

The black carpet in my '64 Avanti in the late '60s was original, but the nap had flattened and turned brown, including the rear carpet. The rear carpet probably had very few feet on it. The carpet flattened and turned brown by itself, not from use.

Those carpets looked good when the car was new. That's what I want my Avanti carpets to look like, like the day it rolled out of the factory. And, I want it to stay that way (unlike the originals).

I can't imagine that the lousy carpet material that Studebaker used is even available today. Technology has advanced. So, this is a moot question.

P.S., if I had a '63 Avanti with salt & pepper carpets I would contact Mike Baker. The only '63 Avanti I have owned was gold with Elk interior. That combination got solid black carpets from the factory.

The replacement salt and pepper carpets sold by most vendors is not correct in that it is a loop pile. Originally the carpets were a freise cut or a short shag or a twisted pile. NOT loop NOT cut pile. The black WAS loop, but the loops were varying sizes, not the more common even loop like GM cars.

According to Mike Baker his Avanti carpet(s) no matter what color are made of the exact material as the originals, because he said, it is the original............as he has a huge stash of rolls of it and has an entity convert that material into the actual fitted carpet.
