  • Engine: 56 J Golden Hawk starter problem

I tried to use the site's search function first, but came up empty.
Hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction. My 56J with Packard 352 w/ twin ultramatic trans has bad windings, so I am looking for a rebuilt or substitute options. The unit on the car is an MDF 6008. A Google search was unproductive. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The '56J, Hudson, Nash and Packard Clipper have Autolite starter, generator and distributors. The senior Packards have Delco accessories. They are for all practical purposes interchangeable, so if you come across a good unit for either, use it.

I have one, un-tested, sitting on the shelf.

If you want to have it rebuilt I recommend Don Allen at http://gener-nator.com/index.htm. He did one for my 55 Nash that has the Packard 320 V8. Good service.

The Delco unit is slightly smaller, slightly lighter and much easier to find parts for, I would rather "switch than fight"!

Thanks for the tip Bills R2, but per Jaybird's recommendation, I contacted Don Allen. He said he could repair my Packard starter. His pricing parameters seem fair, so I boxed it up and sent it to him. I am trying to keep things original as reasonably possible.
