  • Wheels / Tires: Radial tires on a 1964 Daytona convertible

If I want to run radial tires on our 1964 Daytona convertible, should I get later wheels? On our 1954 Commander Starliner, I got later wheels from the late Bob Helm.
    Kindest regards,

    Alan Mende

I'm not a mechanic; I don't even play one on TV.

    Alan,
Ideally you would want to use 15 x 6 new wheels designed for radials (and not 55 years old) and I would choose 215/70r15 tires. The brand and style will depend on your sidewall preference (black or whitewall) or Raised White Letter). Check out Wheel Vintiques for applications and I would recommend Chrysler small lugs over the Ford style larger ones (3/4 vs 13/16).

I would, but I don’t like running any 70+ year old wheels if there’s an easy alternative.

I have the 6” wide version of these on my ‘53 Commander, and a 5” wide set on hand for my ‘61 Lark that hasn’t been delivered yet. The Stude full wheelcovers fit fine.

The offset will put the sidewall of the tire a little closer to the fenders than the OEM wheels.

SS Cragar Mags (15x6 and 15x8-with radials) worked great on my 64 Daytona.

              Matt,

Do you know if Summit Racing 15 x 5 rims will support Studebaker disc brakes? Avanti Parts says that their 5" rims will not support disc brakes.

              Thank you,

              Justin
