  • Transmission question

I have a 64 Hawk with the automatic. I don't drive it very much but it shifts great but when I come to a stop, it won't go back to first unless I put in neutral and then back in drive. Does that sound like something external I could fix or is it inside likely? Thanks in advance Tom

you should only have first gear when pulling away from a stop if you floor the accelerator. Otherwise the trans will start off in second gear, unless you manually select "L" range. ("1" in a Powershift.) Otherwise, it will start off in second. Or are you saying that it doesn't have drive at a stop until you play with the shifter?

Thanks for your response. It may be right then. When I first start out the very first time it shifts and then every time after that it must start out in second. It pulls just fine but I thought something was wrong. Thanks again

Your tranny should start out in 2nd whenever "D" is selected. That is, unless you tromp the gas pedal to the floor from a standstill, as N8 has indicated. Of course, you can also select "L" for a standing start and then shift to "D" once you get going.
