  • Brakes: Rear Brake Drum Removal

Do I need to use a puller to remove the rear drums

  • #2
Most Studebakers used tapered axles. You definitely need a strong hub puller to remove the hub and drum from that type of axle. Make sure it pulls on the lug bolts, not the outside of the drum. I am attaching a photo of the puller that I use. Mine is old and obviously came from Sears, but they are sold elsewhere. ~ Dale

2X what blackhawk says...... Proper Puller on the lug nuts pressing against the axle, or not at all.
There's also a proper procedure for reinstall of the hub. Be very careful to follow it to the letter. NO Lubricants on the axle or inside mating surface, and the key must be inserted properly.
