  • Steering: P.S. Steering wheel violently steers itself back and forth

Hi Guys-- I bought used P.S. system complete off of a '63 Cruiser/289, and installed it into my "63 Wagonaire/289. It installed bolt for bolt. I replaced all hoses with new from S.I. and had the control valve rebuilt by Lares. The pump and ram are used but look clean. The Cruiser parts car had sat in a field for many, many years, but was a fairly low mileage car when parked (90K).
I filled with new fluid and started the engine. All was well, until I touched the steering wheel . I was going to turn it back and forth to bleed the system. As soon as I moved it, it suddenly began whipping back and forth, about a full turn either direction, with enough force to break my fingers if they were in the wheel! The only way to stop it was to shut the engine off. Then, I restarted it, the wheel was still, until I moved it again, whereupon it immediately began violently whipping back and forth again. So I shut it off again. Anybody seen this before? I fee pretty certain I installed the lines correctly (although I'm man enough to admit if I'm wrong)... so what the Devil is causing this?

You have the lines switched at the power cylinder connection. Change them and it will be normal.

That is correct Kenny, the Left Turn and Right Turn Hoses are swapped. Can you say: "Did I do that"?

I have the same set up that I am putting on a 60 Lark Convert. Its apart and was wondering if there is a way to determine which hose goes where. The main hoses off the pump unit are obvious to me but not the other 2. Does not seem to be covered in the shop manual. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I was certain I had figured out and installed the hoses correctly until I touched the steering wheel. It is an eye opener, but Bob, I can say for certain how to know.(Obviously)

Thanks for your thoughts Ron. If I get it wrong , I will now know how it will behave and how to fix it.
