  • Dana Rear End Question?

I changed the entire rear end/axle on my '50 Starlight. I am wondering about the condition of the 80/90 lube that I filled it with. After a test drive (5 miles at 40 mph) I re-checked the rear end lube. It was full and showed no signs of leaks however the lube appears to now be a thin (viscosity) yellow fluid. After waiting a day to check it again it was back to a bit thicker fluid but still yellow (not golden as when first serviced). I really don't have much knowledge in this area and am wondering, is this normal? Does the spinning gearing whip the lube and cause this? Is this a concern? Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Harv, You worry too much. Stick your finger in it and if it doesn't stink (like burned) don't worry about it.

It may have changed color from mixing with a little of the old fluid that was still in the differential.

Doesn't sound like a point of worry to me, either.

          Gents,

Thanks for your replies. I will follow your suggestions and just make sure that it stays filled and that the fluid isn't changing due to overheating.

Harv, you are a lot like me. I over analyze things on my Lark so much it's a wonder I get anything done on it!

              Thanks Todd,

That's probably because I live so close to Canada, eh!.... 35 miles from Windsor. It's a sickness that I work on all of the time. Sometimes I am down right happy with my being analytical. I have tightened up my '50 Starlight so much that when I park it in a shopping mall for our annual show I don't have a need for a drip cloth over the 3 day weekend in there. No fluid drops left on the mall floor after I take it out. Wish that I could say the same for my '64 GT R1 Super Hawk. But, I'm working on it !!!!

              Regards, Harve[8D]
