  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Avanti Dash

I have done some searching and cannot seem to find anyone selling a paintable Dash for a 63 Avanti. I have found some with wood grain but I would like to paint mine Fawn (I plan on changing the interior back to Fawn instead of Black) or maybe have one in aluminum like the center console pieces in my car. The previous owner made a Dash out of wood and if you look closely used an old 7-11 paper to help hold in the gauges. Always fun to find these kind of details!
    Thanks, Tom

The original woodgrain stuff was a heavy vinyl that can be removed. I use a heat gun, then clean up the residue with lacquer thinner. Then you can paint it like the 63 models.

Looks like O.P. may have the wood dash that was installed in some Avanti II.

O.P. is original poster. I was surmising that you have the wood dash that was installed in later (non-Studebaker) Avantis. I have one on the shelf and it looks very similar to the picture you posted.

FWIW, I will check later today. I may have a spare overlay that you could paint and use.

There are 2 overlays on ebay. Both have the wood grain vinyl. The one for $119.95 appears to be correct for Stude Avantis as it has the studs near the clock and the holes for the ignition, windshield wiper switches as well as the turn signal indicators.

The one for $42.00 does not have these. You may be able to alter it so it would work.

With both of them, you would need to remove the vinyl to repaint as suggested.

Looking closer at the one for $119.95 on ebay, it has an extra hole between the tach and speedo near the top. It may not be usable if you plan on repainting.

I do have one from a parts car that does not have the vinyl. Some Previous Owner (P.O.) did a poor job of painting it silver. If you want it, let me know and I can remove it and send it to you.

Thanks for the heads up on the OP meaning! The wood I took out is very thick and looks to be the same used to make a front headliner which the previous owner had put in and nicely crumbled as I took it out - thankfully no splinters!
I am sending you a PM about the Dash - thanks!
