  • Front Axle / Front Suspension: 1949 Commander How to Unload Front Transverse to Disassemble Front End

All the rubber parts in the front suspension are "mushy" so I would like to rebuild the front end.

The tires, wheels, brakes and backing plates are off the car and it is supported on my lift, but I cannot raise of lower the lift due to having the rear axle supported by "tall" stand jacks resting on the floor.

I have rebuilt other front ends, but not on cars with transverse leaf springs in the front suspension. The Shop Manual talks about a tool or plate to "unload" the front spring. What tool works? Do I need to make one? Can you strap the spring ends with ratchet straps?

Who is a good source for replacement rubber parts?

The "official" Studebaker vendors have the parts and the tools.
