  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Gauge rebuild recommendations?

    Looking for recommendations on a business that rebuilds instruments. Relative is looking to have a full set of instruments rebuilt for a '51 Commander - will probably go 12 volt with modern guts. And he would prefer to be able to call and talk to someone.

    There might be NOS gauges that will operate with a voltage reducer like a "runtz". NOS Fuel and temperature gauges will look right and operate correctly with the stock senders. The ammeter and oil pressure gauges operate on 6 or 12 volts.

      Oil pressure is simply pressure transferred through a capillary tube; no electrics involved in that gauge at all.

        I had the gas gauge in my Hawk dash rebuilt by Williamsons Instruments in Chester Arkansas. I've visited with him several times on the phone.

        I am on another very large Hot Rodders site (Jalopy Journal) and several of the members there said the same thing about Williamsons Instruments, quality work and reasonable prices.

        There are guys on the Jalopy Journal that have taken gauges out of new cars and modified them to fit older dashes but not everyone wants to do that. I've done quite a few things on my Stude that I wouldn't have attempted years ago. I've disassembled several switches (including the turn signal switch) as well as the electric wiper and had a fair amount of success. Note....it helped that my wife could assist as I tried to put the switches together, like one of my brother in laws (RIP) who was an electrician said that we need one more hand/arm growing out of our chest

        Not sure if there is a necessity to change your gauges, assuming there are still operational. Radio Roy had a couple of good links to check out also.

          If your temp Gage is the gas type vs. electric (not familiar with early 50's cars), John Wolf was excellent. His info is on the vendors' page.
