  • Brakes: 1949 Commander Front Brakes-How to Disassemble

I am trying to disassemble the front brakes on a 1949 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe and having problems removing the brake backing plates to blast and paint them. There are "bowl like" p[arts that need to be removed before the backing plates can be removed and I can't figure out for sure how to remove them. There do not seem to be any fasteners holding them on the hubs. I'm guessing that they either screw off or that they are a force fit and need to be hammered off. These "bowls" are not mentioned in the shop manual and do not seem to be listed in the chassis parts manual. John Gunnell, Iola, WI

It sounds like you’re referring to the grease shields. They keep wheel bearing grease from slinging onto the shoes. They’re a press fit onto the spindle; a flat blade screwdriver can be used to pry them off.
