  • Fuel Tank Petcock source?

    Hey Folks,

    I've been going over my fuel system and in a vain attempt to remove the petcock from the bottom of the fuel tank it disintegrated (but has left the tank sealed).

    I can proceed on my merry way as is, but I'd really like to drill out and replace the petcock. Question is, is there a source for the petcocks?

    The car in question is a 1953 Studebaker Champion 4dr Sedan.

    Good to hear from you, and that you are back on the Studebaker. I'll be looking for more Stude articles on TheyMightBeRacing!!

    I have never seen a petcock on the fuel tank. There was a 1/4" NPT plug in the bottom of the tank originally - was the petcock installed in place of the plug? Of course with Studebakers, never say never - the factory did interesting things!

    Was it similar to the petcocks installed in older radiators, similar to here:

    [u]Edit:</u> there are different styles, which can be seen by clicking on the Item#.

    Again, looking forward to seeing articles on your Champion. Might help me get back working on my '54 Champion 4-door!

      Since the drain petcocks on fuel tanks were required on show cars to be displayed indoors for Fire regulation reasons, I believe they were available as a very rarely ordered option. Most cars with them, were displayed at regional Area Car Shows however. [^]
      I would order the production order to see if your car was a STAR! [:0]

      OR, someone in the car's past could have simply installed a Radiator drain in the gas tank.

          Pipe plugs are easy to find. Definitely avoid a petcock- easy to have something fly up and open it, or break it off. Put a little sealer on the threads before you put it in.

            I'd think twice about drilling on a fume filled tank. One little spark and KABOOM...........

              I totally agree.... but I've already gone over this tank with the POR-15 fuel tank kit. No more fumes.

                  I finally got the body in for sandblasting. When the air cleared the chassis was in two pieces. The entire body had rotted out ~4 inches up. If there hadn't been so much bondo and chicken wire under the paint it would have fallen apart years before. There just wasn't enough left to work with.

                  I parted out what was left (still have bits lying around). I'm focusing on finishing my current projects (The Champion, 2 Jensen Healeys and an Austin Healey). After that I'm thinking about a nice truck project. If I run across another Lark project in a similar condition (with a more solid body) I may consider the project again.

                  It was really hard giving the idea up, but there's that basic reality check that just didn't make it.

                    Empty the tank, fill it with water and drill it out. Then empty the water, install a pipe plug, fill it with gas and never have to mess with it again.

                      Finished everything up with the fuel system and got the old girl working again. Restored fuel tank, new fuel lines, new fuel pump, blasted & painted all the brackets. Wrote it up here: http://www.theymightberacing.com/Pro...uelSystem.aspx

                      Now I'm tearing into the front to get rid of the squeak coming from the crank pulley.
