  • Engine: Engine number question

New Hawk owner on Facebook is trying to find out what year engine number PL2701 was built. Thought I had some number info on that but apparently not. Anybody know?

WOW! How often do we see a beginning or ending, engine or serial number? Might have a very low body or serial number too.

Might be the first time. But we're not likely to ever ID a LAST number, since Studebaker didn't ever list them (except for M-series trucks).

However, if it is less than the First number of the next series, wouldn't that make it a Last?

You have to wonder if it was the first one off the line if it was used for show purposes. It would be interesting to see the production order.

No, because Studebaker (almost) always started each new year's numbers with 01 or 001. The previous year's numbers stopped wherever they stopped, and generally went unrecorded. There were always some numbers unused.

If you have checked the Chart from the link in Post #2, you now know that it is a Los Angeles Assembled 1955 President 259.
When Presidents no longer had 259's, the P "President" indicated a 289 in 1956 to 1964.
