  • Transmission / Overdrive: 64 Avanti going into neutral

After shifting into reverse or drive, initially the car moves as directed, but after a few seconds goes into neutral while the shifter indicator is still in gear. I can then return to neutral and back to reverse or drive, but it will again shift into neutral (or get out of gear). At high forward speeds it doesn't seem to do it, only backing out of the garage and driveway (low RPM). What causes this? Any ideas? Thanks to everyone.

Sounds like it COULD be poor shifter adjustment.
You will want to make absolutely SURE if you adjust it, that it goes ALL the way into Park.
Because, they have been known to do the "Runaway Ford Thing", that is; when Parked and Idling, drop into Reverse and take off down the driveway!

Check the Shift Lever Grommet condition on the Trans.

Upon further consideration, I decided to check the trans fluid level. It was more than a pint low. No more problem.

It is probably time for Front and Rear Seals, if it WAS full at some point.
