ALL the factory-installed ones I have seen are located ON TOP of the dash-brace a couple inches from the fuse panel... just to the left of the steering wheel (unless yours is RHD)

It is a small white box (approx dimentions posted earlier).. with 4-wires coming out the bottom, and 2-posts coming off the side (6-cyl/V-8 choice). One of the posts should have a WHITE wire going to it from the tachometer head.
I'm having the same issue with my 63 GT, but I haven't yet determined if the sending unit is bad or something was not connected back up during some PO's resto work. (Like the windshield washer bag that's not there. )

So, here's my question: I see the sending unit on top of the dash brace - how is it attached to the brace, and how do I get it off if I need to swap it out? It appears to be mounted from the top. Not a lot of elbow room up there.

There are a couple of bolts that go through the brace to hold the sending unit. Get one of those small headlamps then you'll be able to see a lot better while you're lying on your back with tools in your hands in that cramped space.

Didn't get a chance to pull the Tach today, but looking at the posts, I wonder if the sending unit is being hidden by the brace? I saw several wires going to an area on top the brace, but couldn't see on top to see if there was anything there. I can say though that I really ache today from lying in the position I was in yesterday!!

The sender on my car was mounted above the brace ( over the ignition switch), near a junction block with the green wire from the sender and the pink wire to the distributor. The sender is about 2 inches square and has a white, plasterlike packing on the bottom end with the terminals.
