  • Had an accident with the jack...

    I had an accident with the jack when lowering it off. The jack slipped back off the front axle of my Champ and bang into the oil pan. What would be damaged in this case?[}] Should I jack it back up and remove the pan? Should I replace it? Oi![V]

    Sump pick-up is in the bottom, near drainplug. If your accident didn't compromise the gasket seal to block or puncture the pan, all it will do is create an ugly pan.[:0][V]

      If you crushed the sump more than about 1/2 to 3/4 inch you will pick-up more sludge in the oil pump pickup screen, or block it. If you crushed the shallow front part, a rod could hit when coming down on the BTC of it's stroke. Maybe best to fix it, but you could run it(idle), listen for noise, watch oil pressure -you'll need to connect one to the right head at the rear where the idiot light sending unit is. Good luck!

        May be a problem, and then again it may not. The pan on my Transtar has taken a few off-road hits in the past and seems to be fine, no leaks anyway, but these are more like scrapes.
        If it hit the pick up, that could be a problem, depending on how far it got pushed in. Does it leak?, will it start?, is so what is the oil pressure? Any bad sounds when it fires up?

          I'm not to the point of actually starting the motor. He... Um, heck, I just got it to turn over for the first time this year, today. The jack slipped between the steering rod and the pan in the forward part of the lower pan. No, it's not shallow, it's a serious dent.
          I guess I'll wait for now, concentrate on getting the motor reassembled. The question, I guess, is how far off the bottom of the pan is the strainer. If it's damaged, who has one available? SASCO perhaps? I mean, I could steal one off the original motor, I'd rather not.

          Can I get a new pan for this motor? Again, I can steal one off of the possible donor engine I have.[}] Still, I'd rather not.

            The strainer has a bit of a hinge to it, so may well have no ill effects, even if it was jostled. Once you get it running, satisfactory oil pressure will indicate nothing to fear.

              If you take the pan off to straighten it, I've found a 2X4 or 4X4 block of hard wood like oak works good for a little body and fender work. It helps eliminate the "elephant tracks" a hammer can leave and makes it much easier to reach certain areas.

                I'd be worried. It MIGHT still function and it might not. Brad mentioned that the pickup's hinged a bit but, Brad, that's only on earlier V8s. Later ones had a rigid pickup mounted to a rigid piece of pipe that screws into the oil pump.
                I know I'm talking extreme here but then, Clunk's interpretation of a "serious dent" might be less than mine. Can't say because we can't see.[B)]
                Ron, no new pans available - wish there were! I don't THINK the pickup tubes are to be had new either. I'd take John's suggestion and bang out the pan with a piece of 2X4 and a hammer. I recently banged the bottom of one to somewhat decent shape like that. Did it with the pan sitting on the lawn so it cushions it a bit.

                    You say the engine isn't together yet but I don't know how far from it. Take the spark plugs out and turn it by hand. If there is any binding it may be hitting the pan or the pick up. If the distributer is out run the oil pump with a drill to see if it still picks up oil. It should quickly get hard to turn. This will help tell if you cracked the oil pick up tube. Jack accidents are never fun. At least no one is hurt.

                      I'd like to echo what Rob just said - thank goodness it was the pan that suffered and not our pal, Clunk![xx(]

                      Yes Gary, we do have lawns here in the valley. Technically, it IS desert here, but not to where cactus are the primary greenery. In fact, when settlers first pitched their tents on what's now Visalia, it was covered by GIANT Oak trees and lesser greenery. There was water too. Fact is, big schooners used to sail thru the valley and out to San Francisco in the 1800s!

                        Hey Biggsie! I loooove that lawn decoration!

                        I know everyone gets tired of those desertscapes and palm tree lined streets, but here's another typical California landscape. The view from my front door:



                        This was taken in August of last year. That bare area on the far ridge is what happens when the BLM decides to do a 'controlled burn' on a day that has one percent humidity and seventy mile an hour gusts of wind. If it hadn't rained, the whole town would have burnt. But what can I say? That's the breaks living out in the California Desert (LOL).

                            The oil pan on my 51 Champion had a good sized dent in it so I bought what was supposed to be a replacement from an SDC vendor but when it arrived it was not the correct oil pan. I already had the damaged oil pan off and decided it would be easier to straighten the dent out rather than messing with trying to get the incorrect pan exchanged. I said all that to say two things. (1) If the pan doesn't have a deep crease, it isn't that hard to straighten out, once you have the pan off. (2) I have no idea what this other oil pan fits, other than it will not fit a 169 cu. in. 6-cyl, if you can determine what it will fit from a pic, I'll take and post a pic of the oil pan, if it will fit, you can have it for the price of shipping from Missouri.

                              Ron, if the pan just has a big dent, and hasn't been pulled to the point that the gaskets will leak, or if the pickup screen hasn't been compromised, just MIG weld a washer edge-wise in the bottom of the dent, and use an L-hook in a bodyman's slide hammer to pull out the dent. Then grind the washer off. Repeat as required.

                              Can save you major time over pan re & re.
