    But, like all other rust, as soon as oxygen has access to bare metal the rust returns. Once you have them as clean as possible remove any residue from the cleaning and apply a good quality wax to hinder the stains returning. The only cure I know of to halt the process is to have them professionally re-chromed.

    If they are chrome plated, WD-40 and a brass tooth brush work well. You can also use steel wool, but no coarser than 0000.
