  • Steering: Ross type SL steering box bearings

I just posted on the for sale/wanted thread for 2 sets of these bearings #1556013 and #1542674 cup/race. When I took the box apart the steering post/gear had the bearings loose in the races, 12 bearings in the lower and 13 bearings in the upper locations. Does anyone know if this is an acceptable way to mount the post in the box? I don't know if the proper bearings in the plastic retainer are available, but if so hopefully someone out there has them. What say all of you experts out there with knowledge of this type situation? Thanks, Bill.

If the plastic is still good, you can get the bearings. The shop manual has the procedure for setting it up. Shims at the top set the pre-tension.

Thanks Brad, the issue is that there is no plastic retainers in either bearing, just loose bearing balls running against each race. The bottom bearing had 12 loose balls in it and the upper bearing had 13 loose balls in it. Any idea if this is OK to run that way or do I need to figure out some other way to put the box back together? Bill

Which car are you working on? The Avanti races are NLA. However, I was able to get some from a jeep that fit the GT.

I have one NOS 1542674 race, also says on the envelope Ross 400056.

FYI: 1970 Book F shows: 1542674 use 1565963, so there is a parts substitue for the race ( I don't have any of the latter).

PM me if interested in the race.

Typically if you replace a bearing that had a retainer with loose balls you add 1 ball. Basically, put in as many balls as will fit.

Just ran a search on the web and came up with the following listing for a Ross 400056 race: https://thebernscompany.com/product/...ng-cup-400056/ Not positive it's the same as used in the Ross SL steering gear, however there is a "Product Inquiry" feature on the website if someone wants to check it out.

Henry, I'm working on my '64 GT Hawk. Do you have any info on the Jeep parts?
Dan, I really need to find the bearings in the retainers, but if I do then I'll want new races also. I'll let you know. Thanks, Bill.

I may have kept the packaging, so I will look in the morning. I believe I bought it from Walcks 4x4, but I do not recall which year or model Jeep. It was about 10 years ago. I do have a parts GT with steering box still intact. I will check on condition of bearings and retainers as well.

I pulled the spare GT steering box apart and the bearing retainers are intact. PM me your address and I will get them in the mail.

FWIW, they are identical to my Avanti spares. Therefore, it must have been some other model I purchased the retainers from Walcks for.

FWIW, the plastic retainer has 8 ball bearings.

Henry, thanks for your efforts. You didn't have to pull a box apart. Jerry Kaiser in Arizona has a set of new bearings and races, so I'll get them from him. Save those bearings you have as they are the same part#'s for the Hawk and Avanti.

No problem. Only took a few minutes to disassemble as it was already out if car. Glad you found some new ones.
