  • Steering: Saginaw Power Steering

I have a 1954 Land Cruiser with factory installed Saginaw power steering. Recently the system has intermittently failed to work. First I checked the fluid in the reservoir which was somewhat low. I refilled and the problem seemed to be solved. Yesterday I took the car for a 170 mile jaunt and everything was fine until I got back in my driveway.......no power steering!! Need advice.

They are incredibly durable and reliable. Biggest problem is leaky hoses or pump seal. Flush it once you've fixed the leak. Empty the reservoir and refill it. Drive it a ways and drain again. repeat this seveal times until the fluid (Merc-Dex will do) is clear. It likely has a lot of sludge in there. I doubt it has been touched in 65 years!
