  • Checking Fuel Guage and Sending unit

My gas guage was not working when I took the car apart.

Can I check my guage by hooking it up to a six volt battery with two wires or is something else needed to keep from ruining the guage? If this can be done, should it show full or empty when hooked up directly in this manner?

Can I test the sending unit from the tank by including it in the above mentioned circuit and moving the arm from the full position to the empty position?

I tried using an ohm meter to check just the sending unit and it didn't move the needle as I moved the arm on the sending unit.

If the guage does not work, is there a way to check the sending unit to see if it needs to be repaired too, before I get another guage?

The car is disassembled so I will be doing these things on the workbench in my shop, if this makes a difference.

Will a sending unit from a different kind of automobile work or is there some specific thing about the one made for the car that will not allow this to work?

    Thanks for any suggestions.
