1956 289V8 OIL PAN GASKETS

Is there any alternative to the 4 piece cork gasket for the oil pan ?
Having just replaced one while the engine was still in car , I NEVER want to do that again

No there is not, you have to hope that if you EVER need to again, you will be able to do it the easy way, upside down on a engine stand!
