I can't get my 58 P hawk into reverse. When its in park it shows just above the N. When I drop it into R its actually in low. I had put this on the forum last month and was advised to change both the engine and tranny mount (engine mounts looked really bad), however, I still have the same problem. I don't have any adjustment left at the tranny. I need help!

Sounds to me like a bent rod somewhere in the shift linkage. The bend would take up needed length and not allow you to adjust properly.

Do you have a 1/2 inch thick spacer under the left[drivers side rear mount? I'm not sure about the '58,but I know most 'Stude automatics have to have it. ??????????

The rod was connected when I had bought the car. Previous owner said car hadn't been driven in 10 years, but had been started on occasion.I had disconnceted rod to make sure everything correct on colum (seems fine when rod disconnected). I may try feeding the pin through the other way to see if that does anythingsigpic

I went through the adjustment routine this summer with my 61 Lark and can offer a few pointers. The service manual says to perform the adjustment with the transmission in "D"rive. Once you pull the rod off you'll find there are five distinct clicks, PNDLR, as you move the lever on the side of the tranmission back and forth. "D"rive is the second position from either end. As easy as it sounds it took several times through the positions, PNDLR, to make sure it was in "D". I recommended having an assitant hold the shift lever on the steering column so that the indicator on the steering coulmn stays in the "D" position while you make the adjustment to the swivel pin. It should freely enter the insulator in the transmission lever when both the transmission and the indicator are in the "D" position. It is pretty easy to accidently move the transmission lever to another postion while making the adjustment. I suspect your problem may be that you have the rod adjusted to the wrong position on the transmission. One final suggestion, take a close look at the insulator (bushing) in the transmission lever(inner brass bushing within a rubber outer dougnut). These bushings can get soft and worn and will make the shift lever sloppy. They are readily available (part number 1539489) from many vendors. Good luck.
