  • Fabric needed for 1931 seats

I recently acquired a 1931 Six Model 54 and need to re-do the upholstrey. We have located everything except the seat material. I would like to keep the original style fabric if possible. It was a two tone stripe of dark green and a greyish beige.

Does anyone know of a source for proper period fabric's? We have tried but with no success.

If not, what suggestions are there for alternate fabrics and patterns that would still keep it in proper perspective with the era. The car was complete and original and I am trying to keep it that was as much as I can.

    Thanks for the help.

Well, you can have it custom woven for the big bucks. Most folks just chose a`period correct, close match.

How perfect do you want this? I'm a furniture upholsterer (reformed auto trimmer) and my sample books for commercial applications have a nice selection of auto-style fabrics. Try your local furniture upholsterer for a bargain. If you want wool, you'd have better luck with an interior designer since that would be a more up-scale choice. And don't forget the local fabric shop! A buddy and I found an almost perfect match for his '52 Caddy in the suit wool section.
Besides, it was an awful lot of fun to confuse all the ladies- they don't see many men in there[}]

Heh, that is the truth. My local JoAnn Fabrics has a decent selection of high density foam though, and they also sell bulk velcro (works for vent window fuzzies) and they also sell some upholstery vinyl and headliner cloth.

I have sent requests to your recomendations and I am so far still looking.

I will also take a trip to the fabric stores to see what may jump out at us. Who knows what may be hiding there.

Thanks for all the ideas, any and all additional thoughts will be appreciated.

SMS will custom weave for you. The cost is not any more than what they sell their in stock fabric for, the only proviso is that it takes a minimum of 8 months, and they need a sample.

We stopped in at SMS when we were in Oregon City. WOW!! Not only will they custom weave, but they can also replicate any vinyl. The warehouse is a monster (Peter took pictures)
