  • Carb Hat

Below is a pic of the current number one eyesore, the carb hat. The hood insulation has worn through the chrome, exposing the copper, which has the green patina. In addition, the chrome is peeling off in chunks. I would much prefer this renewed. How tough are these to come across in good shape. Better to send mine in as a core?

    Jim,

The vendors have reproduction carb hats. I bought mine from Phil Harris at Fairborn. I believe I paid about $135.00. The reproduction hats appear to have a few air bubbles in the cores that show through the chrome surface. You have to determine if your hat is original and the condition of the core for re-chroming. I am quite happy with the reproduction carb hat that I have on my Hawk and the air bubbles are hidden under the rubber hose. Phil told me the repros are all like that and he brought a bunch of them to Southbend for me to swap out the one that he sent me. I found them all to be the same and kept the one that he sent me.

You may find that re-chroming your original my be more expensive than buying a new one. Only you would know the new one is a reproduction unit.

    Good luck,

    Allen

I cut a hole in my hood insulation to allow clearance.

I bought one from Dave Thiebault. I don't know if it was a repro or a re-chromed original.

When I sent my original out to be chromed it came back polished!! It had lost so much chrome that the re-plater thought it was supposed to be polished aluminum.

Check for cracks around the hold down hole before you spend money on yours.

Problem resolved. Repro unit on the way to seal up the hole while the original is rechromed. Thanks, Fairborn

Our 63 Avanti R2 has the same situation. The hood has an Avanti II pad, which is wee bit thicker than the hood pad that was on the car. So it makes for a similar situation where the vibrating of the engine and the immovable pad makes for a nice buffing surface for the bonnet, reservoir, and whatever else is high on the engine. What we have done is cover these areas with masking tape, that we throw with our stuff in the trunk, to protect these areas from being scuffed clean. At the shows of course the tape comes off, a little Goo Gone is applied, and the vehicle is ready for the show.

No problem, saves on the typical buzzer noise that I get from the other forum members. [)] [)]
Yeah we happened upon this when we first got the Avanti. The mat looks good but shoot if it buffs the nice chrome underneath to a dull finish

I can't be happier with the help I've had from Fairborn. I'm in the middle of a restoration on a 55 K-code and Phil seems to have the little nuisance parts I need and he delivers them promptly. I'll be ordering more as the job gets done. Same with Don at Silvertone exhaust. Joining SDC was the best thing I could have done. Thank you all!
