  • S-10 rear end in 52 Studebaker

    I am in the process of building my 52 Commander. I bought it on eBay a few years ago without the engine and transmission. I have put a 64 Jet Thrust 289 with a 63 three speed transmission. Since the car had a 456 rear, I decided to put a Chevy S-10 (actually the one I got came out of a 2002 Sonoma) rear in it. The Sonoma rear is a 342 positraction. I needed to get it installed today because I need the lift in my garage for my work vehicle and I didn't have anybody to help me so I improvised a set up. Luckly, I have a lift in my garage. I placed a board over both springs and placed slid the rear over the board. Then I raised tyhe lift and removed the board. That really helped a lot. The S-10/Sonoma is one of the more narrow rears that you can get. I actually had to widen the pearches 1/2" on each side. The wheels fit between the fenders very nicely.

    Leonard; Looks like you are doing a great job with that '52, I like it. [^] I don't know a whole lot about C***y's, but isn't a S10 a wimpy little mini truck with a little 4 or V-6 engine? And if true to form GM always underbuilds their stuff to just barely get by without breaking under "normal" use. So if you put a 289 R1 JT engine with 240 plus HP in front of it, will it take it?

      Actually, from what I have heard, the S-10/Sonoma rear is fairly beefy. Many rodders use it. Of course I am not planing on racing the car. I was just going to use the 63 Lark rear that I had but it wouldn't fit between the fenders. It seems that the 53 and later Studes were wider that the 52 and earlier. I wanted something that would fit without having to cut the fenders. Also the brakes on the Sonoma are bigger. Here is a picture of the donor truck.

        Isn't it the 7.5" or 7.625" ring gear rear end that the s-10s used? First used in the Monza, and then in 78-up mid-sized cars, they aren't a heavy-duty rear end, but they are durable enough to have been used with V8's successfully--even in later Camaros and Firebirds. You now have a 5 on 4 3/4" wheel bolt pattern to contend with, though. If it gives more wheel well clearance, that should be a plus.

          Yes, It has a 7.625 ring gear and a 4.75 bolt patern same as Camero. I am using the S-10/Sonoma wheels on the rear.

            There is a 54 Studebaker coupe with a Chevy 350 - 354 horse engine and a S-10 rear on eBay now.
