Speedometer cable on 1954

I am in the middle of restoring a 1954 Commander Coupe and I need to replace the speedometer cable. Can someone give me some tips on how the assembly comes apart at the automatic transmission. I am having a difficult time with it. I am not sure if the entire cable and housing come out of the piece that attaches to transmission or what. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi; if you just have a kinked or twisted core and the housing is OK, you should be able to simply unscrew the cable from the speedo and pull the core out for replacing and greasing with grafhite speedo lube.

If replacing the entire unit, it should have a clamp ring with a small 1/4" bolt holding it to the tranny case. After removing that, you pull the cable with pinion gear attached out of the transmission case.

On the Automatic there is an extention housing with the cable facing forward, that housing DOES NOT need to be removed!
