  • 51 landcruiser 6 volt or 12 volt

I just got a 51 landcruiser. It has the 232 and the automatic transmission. I called the parts store looking for a 6 volt battery and was told that he had a 6 and 12 volt listed. According to his computer there was a twelve volt option that year. Is this right and how do you know the difference? I know it is probably something simple but I just worked 14hrs and my brain is mush. I thought maybe a tag on the generator or something? Thanks in advance for your help.

If it is 100% stock it is 6V. 12V was introduced for passenger cars in the 1956 model year. What color is the tag on your generator? If it's a Delco, it should be black. A red tag would indicate that your car has a later model 12V generator installed. Not sure about Autolites.

You can usually find 6 volt batteries at Tractor Supply or other farm supply stores. Purist frown on the idea but for year's we ran my son's '53 Champion with an 8 volt battery which are even harder to find. It made the lights brighter and the starter spin much faster. Back then we had an old man here in town that made custom tar top batteries and that is where we got them.

NAPA sells a good 6 volt battery. Have had one in my 50 Champion for four years
        without trouble.

Any qualified dealer should be able to supply you with the proper six-volt battery. Ask for a Group One. It will be the proper size. Everyone will have their brand preference. Don't opt for cheap.

A well maintained six-volt system served the driving public for the better part of sixty years.
