  • Hawk owners where do these wires go

    I have two wires that I can't remember where they connect. One is a ground strap, the other is a red wire that goes along the fire wall. Does anyone know where these wires connect or what function the red wire serves?

    If you posted a pic I can't see it (checking the forum on my lunch hour at work) but the red wire on the firewall is for the OD, if you don't have OD it is just disconnected. The ground strap should go around the pass. side motor mount.

      That ground strap, the one you show in your picture, goes around the copper oil pressure line, just around it and to ground. At least that's were it was on my 55 President.

      I agree with Nate on the OD wire.

        The Red Overdrive wire is not "disconnected" just not used, that may be what Nate meant. Most people without O.D. use it for the Electric Auto. choke on the new Edelbrock AFB clones, because it is connected to the IGN term of Ign. Sw. and is always hot when Ign. is on.

        And yes as Tom said the small braided ground strap is to eliminate Radio ignition interference carried through the metal (copper) oil press. gauge line from coil and Plug wires to the Radio! [:0]

        On a '61 you should however have a large gauge insulated black wire from the right front engine mount bracket on the block, to the self tapping screw on the frame engine mount bracket. This is critical to light all of the lights and components (Accessories) grounded to the body.

        It also appears that your Speedometer cable grommet is mislocated or missing from the firewall just above the ground strap.

          I am ASSUMING that your secondary ignition wires/boots are not yet installed for operation.

            Anyone have a pic of the strap and how it is connected to the copper oil line
            Yes we will use the OD red wire for the choke, thanks for tell me.
            The grommet is in the tool box and will be install[]thanks

              Where the 3/8" gap in the rubber sleeving on the copper line is, there was a small clamp with a small bolt and nut or other fastener to attach the strap.

                    That clamp seems to be a 1540722, it's part of the Radio Suppression Kit that came with the Radio Installation Kit, a pretty rare to find item now-days in NOS, SASCO has none. They are not on the no radio cars.

                    You would need to get it from a parts car, and I might find and disassemble one "SOMEDAY" but I can't do it "right away", maybe someone else has one.

                    Note that on the Forum if you place your Reply AFTER the "reply to" post, It is pretty hard for old eyes to pick it out of all the rest and read it, because the system downsizes it! [:0]

                      Here are a couple of photos from our 61' Hawk of the subject in question. Also, regarding the possible contact of the horizontal hood support rod with the battery support bar and j-rod assembly, if you watch as you slowly close the hood it rolls back towards the firewall and away from the area. I used a couple of oversize nuts as spacers to fill between the battery support bar and battery hold down bracket. When we got the car it had a stack of old washers in there. I don't know what the factory original setup looked like myself?

                        Dean, that's a great pic, I remember that part well. I should have taken the screw out of the firewall. I have miss placed that clamp. I am going to look at the parts car I have and see if it's there, thank you so much.

                          The spark plug wires should be pressed completely and firmly into the distributor cap and the boots on the wires should be as far down onto the distributor cap as they will go.
