I just came across the exact same tranny and shifter set up that Gordon is working on for Dick.
    Anyone interested in it??

Back in the late 50's, I drove out to the plant 8 parts depot in South Bend. with a list of parts to "build" that shifter. The counter guy glanced at my list, walked back to the parts bins and handed me a box with all the parts in it, including a instruction sheet. They had so many requests, they'd boxed up a few kits, ready to go.

I wonder if it includes one of Gord's (patent pending) Reverse/Overdrive lockout, lockouts!!!

I never had a problem since the OD solenoid does not engage until you are going over 25 MPH. I think the later cars did not even have the lockout.

Even without the "auto" lockout, you soon adjust to disengaging the OD before selecting reverse gear. And, if you forget, you receive a quick reminder from the transmission.

JP, you need to have the mechanical lockout, or you won't get reverse gear. You can't drive the over-running clutch in reverse. The electrical lockout is the one not needed.

My bad, JDP I should have described it better! I meant to say the mechanical reverse enabler! I never gave those old electric reverse lockouts any thought I guess, they are so useless I had put them out of my mind, but remembered Gord's excellent fix for those top shifters! [^]

Will this fit a 1949 champ sedan?

Sorry, no! This trans is a T-86 (6 Bolt top cover)for a Commander V-8 or a Commander Big 6 truck. Champions get the small top cover (4 Bolt) T-96.

Jeep? They have a floor shift that I can put in my champ?

As far as I know, there is no top-shift cover that will directly fit a T96 transmission used in Champion cars. The T84 top cover as used in WWII Willys and Ford military Jeeps might fit, but I've never tried it.

There are a host of aftermarket floor shifters that connect to the side levers used by the column-shift setup.

Thanks Gord I appreciate it. What are some of those aftermarket brands? That sounds like an easy switch over if all they do is hook up to the side levers.

You will have to choose a generic 3 spd shifter because AFAIK
nobody makes a aftermarket shifter kit specifically for your application.
I have seen shifters for T-86's on ebay recently, some with some without installation kits. None for T-96's BTW.
