  • 55 Speedster-Side Grill Sections

I am probably usurping this technical forum, but I'm in a panic mode.

All chrome on my 55 Speedster had to be re-chromed. At the same shop my friend also had 55 side pieces re-chromed for resale. I did not check right away, but the shop mixed up our orders and I now have non Speedster side pieces which do not fit. He's sold his some time ago.

The 55 parts manual shows that Models 16G, 6H - C-K (Speedster is 6H-K7) seem to have the same side pieces.

Since these items (in my experience) are hard to find, I'm asking all forum members if they have or know sources for these pieces either chromed or needing chromed.

Again, I apologize for this non-technical question.

There are two side grills, sedan, and coupe/hardtop. The coupe/hard top are perhaps four times as expensive and much rarer.

I have ONE Right Hand '55 side grill (parking light) piece. It is numbered RH-308072. It is lightly pitted, suitable for chroming. Complete with lens, bulb and wires.

Since the 53-58 body parts catalog sees fit not to include the front end of the cars, I do not know if this is for a C-K or a sedan.

I can bring this with me to South Bend Friday. If there is need, please so advise. I have no idea of value, JDP says $x or $4X. I'm happy with that.

If you think Tom's price is reasonable, buy it. NOS left hand pieces are still available very rarely but I've never seen a passenger side one. I think I paid $300-350ish for a NOS but shop worn driver's side. Pass sides even in "good core" condition are not easy to come by, I would just plan on rechroming that one.

Matter of fact, if someone had an excellent (e.g. not too badly pitted, steel socket intact, no chip out of lower edge where the bumper bolt always smacks it) pass. side core I'd be interested in it myself. I still have one "decent" core with the chip out of it which really looks like hell but is as good as I've seen.

Also send your stuff to a GOOD chroming shop. I had one done and am somewhat disappointed with the quality of work. They lost a lot of the crisp detail around the lens, and there's some "waves" in it as well.

actually birdbrain I'd be willing to sell the replate if you are just looking for "driver" quality but I'm suspecting most speedsters are getting real restorations these days. I know I'm probably being overly picky as my car is far from a show car but IMHO it doesn't look as good as what's on there now (looks like a NOS piece that was installed and then involved in a wreck; has the chip out of it and some really creative repair work on the mounting areas but the chrome is still good.)

Thanks for the endorsement, Nate. Can you shed light on the C-K/Sedan question?

the easiest way to tell a C-K side piece from a sedan side piece is the number of studs above the lens. C-Ks have three and sedans have two. the parking light lenses are the same, so that's no help. the pieces look very similar from a distance, but as some have found to their dismay they are NOT interchangeable.

The C & K, Right & Left parking light housings have a bolt hole on the rear lower corner of each. The sedan doesn't. C, K, numbers are right 309432w, left 309433w. I think that number (308072) is a casting number and it's mot in the parts book.

That helps. This one has two studs above the lens, so it's for a Sedan. This won't help Henry, but if anyone is interested, Let me know on or off forum and I'll bring it to South Bend, no reasonable offer refused, no cost for transportation.

                Thanks, Nate.

Tom, thank you for your reply. That's correct, I have the one you listed.

N8N. I'm not quite clear if you have the driver's or passenger's side or both. I might consider it pending some further looking including the swap meet at South Bend. Thanks

Have you checked up on your car recently? Rumor has it that JP was offering it to anyone that would pay the storage bill. Hope you beat me and my rollback to it Saturday. [}]

birdbrain, the one that I would be willing to sell is the passenger side. I don't believe that I have *any* extra driver's side housings, either replates or cores.
