  • Hood spring help needed

Rather than continuing to make my Chiropractor wealthy, I have decided to order and install the hood springs which were apparently omitted by prior owner following recent paint job.
    I have ordered from S.I.: Kit # 770530, which includes both required springs , 608907P & 28450P.( fits all 1953-1958 cars)
Unsure as to mounting points, the illustration in the shop manual is very vague and only shows 1 spring. A photo, sketch or verbal direction for correct installation would be greatly appreciated.
NO RUSH- parts not due until end of week.
    Thank you again !

Those springs help to keep the hinges aligned, they DO NOT hold the hood up,and they don't make it any easier to open the hood.

The heavier spring goes straight down the back of the front fender and hooks to a tab on the inner fender. You'll need a length of mechanics wire hooked to the spring under the fender. Wrap the other end of the wire around a bar of some sort and pull down and over the tab.
One end of the weaker, longer small spring fits in a hole in the inner, the other end over the torsion bar brace.

Thanks ! Whew ! These hoods are definitely the heaviest I have ever
lifted, not for 90 pound weaklings, for sure !

I hear the weight of these hoods has been a complaint since the Hawks were new.[It's even heavy without the grille in place] You also have to pull forward on the hood as you lift it,or lower it. Then, when you work under the hood, the hood latch becomes a dangerous spike, watch your head!!!
And,if that's not enough, the hood latch is infamous for coming unlatched going down the road at speed!
A few have modified the hood to open backward, including 'sbca96' on this forum.
