  • crankshaft end play

Just set crankshaft in 259 block. Ground crank, 0.01 main bearings.

The crank end play is .07 with no shim. Should be .003 to .006 per manual. The original shim was .005

Does this large gap indicate a problem or is it typical? Just need large shim. Just seems like a big difference.

    thanks

End play is controlled by the hub on the end of the crankshaft. Make sure the hub is not 'hanging up' and that crankshaft vibration damper bolt has the proper torque.

I have not installed the vibration damper. Put in new bearings, set crank, torqued caps (after checking bearing gaps) and checked crank end play.
      that's it.

The endplay is NOT controlled by the hub!

The end play is controlled by shims between the wear face plate and the crank! Find a manual.

You add shims to get the clearance you desire.
I just bought all three sizes from Stude International....005", .007", .009", are I believe are the sizes available. I bought 4 of each just to make sure when I start this operation...that I have what I need without (hopefully!) having to buy more.

This may take removing the crank gear a coupla times to get it just right.

DO NOT...alter the location of the gear on the crank to alter the clearance. The gear should be snugged up tight to it's shoulder when measuring.

Mike, you are correct about the shims.
I was suprised that installation of new main bearings left me with .07 end play. I'll need almost 10 shims at .007 to get the clearance right.
Seems like a lot when one .005 did the trick before I put in new bearings. Guess it is what it is. It's not a complex measurement.

I'm missing something here. If you have .070" end play now, then adding shims will only INCREASE the end play.

My guess is you do not have the hub pushed all the way on against the crank gear or if you have not installed the hub yet, then the crank gear is not being pressed on hard enough to take up all the clearance yet.

Maybe I'm just not understanding what you are saying but if you really have .070" now, adding ten .007" shims would make it about .140". ??
