this is off memory but I think you are correct.

    red/white - brake light switch
    black - flasher output
green (should have white tracer I think) - RR
    brown (same) - LR
    white/green - RF
    white/brown - LF

if some of the tracers are worn off and/or colors are not clear you should be able to meter these out and figure out the remainders.

    good luck,

    nate

        Thanks Nate and Paul,

Paul: This is the wiring diagram I have from my manual. The problem is that it doesn't give the color code for the switch wires.

Nate: That's the way I have the wires hooked up now. The second part of my question was if everything is not hooked up -- I haven't installed the grille bars yet because I have to repaint the silver part of the grille shells -- will what's still hooked up work? Right now, neither rear directional signal works, nor do the brake lights. Before I had the car apart for restoration work, that same directional signal switch worked fine. And yes, the bulbs are good; they're George Rohrbach's LED bulbs.

Led bulbs may require a different flasher to work, the led bulb does not have enough "load" to operate a stock flasher. My experience with a burned out bulb means the flasher will not work, hence with lights not hooked up they probably won't work. Brake lights were never affected.

I would think that if it was just the LEDs the brake lights would still work even if the flashers did not. Also they would tend to be steady on rather than not working at all. I think some more troubleshooting is sadly in order. Also you may have to rewire the dash indicators to the later configuration if you are using LED bulbs as the current through the dash bulbs may be enough to light the opposite side front blinker. Time to crawl under the dash with a test light and start probing stuff...

In my experiences I have found that if you have a Std. flasher unit, a non-functional bulb will cause a flicker in the turn sig. on the other end of the car if it is grounded, since you have no front lights at all probably nothing will happen, as indicated.

However if you purchased the H.D. variable load Truck/trailer 6 bulb +, 4 way flasher type Flashing Unit, the same condition will not affect the flashing effect.

Also keep in mind that Studebakers are wired with the dash indicator bulbs tied to the FRONT turn indicators. [:0]

Of course with those omni-directional LED contraptions, all bets are off, GOD only knows what will happen, as they do not have adequate load to operate on "normal" systems. I would do all testing with "REAL" bulbs!

                Doh!

Of course, George told me that with the LED taillight bulbs, I would have to use regular bulb in the front or there wouldn't be enough resistance to get them to operate. Guess I'll just have to wait until I have the front turn signals in to perform tests.

Thanks for the figurative dope slap.

That is part of if not all of your problem. You need them all to connected to work.

Depending on the state of disassembly of your front end, you might try making the front lights working without them being installed. I ended up doing a lot of this getting my tail light assemblies wired properly. If the sockets aren't still wired to the harness, use clip leads between the socket wires and the harness and ground, put in the bulbs, and test to your hearts content.

I have LED rear light bulbs. The front bulbs are standard incandescent bulbs. My turn lights blink fine. The amount of light from the rear LED bulbs is very adequate, not dim. Question: are there LED white light bulbs for the front? My LED rear lights are from Auto Zone, they have no white light LED bulbs for sale. I understand an LED bulb will not produce white light. I would think LED bulbs in front and rear may not draw enough current to make the turn signals blink.
