Glass Installation

Can anyone help with tips or instruction on glass installation in a 49 2R5 pickup?

I have all new glass and rubber, windshields, backglass, side and vent windows.

Here's how I put the vent windows in my M5:

I got some rubbery glass-setting tape from LeBaron Bonney in Amesbury, Mass. and used that to mount the door glass in the channels. The tape provides a good grip and very tight fit, so a little persuasion with a mallet and wood block was needed to drive the channels onto the glass, very carefully! I had removed the vent frame from the garnish moldings for painting. The rubber seals were replaced with reproduction ones, riveted in place. Then the latches and vent window needed to be reattached with small tubular rivets. I found it easier to set the rivets by putting a small bearing ball on the end of the rivet and squeezing the ball down with a Vise Grips to start spreading the tubular end. Once it was spread a little, the ball was removed and Vise Grips were used to tighten up the rivet. No hammering on the rivets!

Door windows go into the channels with rubber tape, too. I prefer tape to liquid glue because the taped window is immediately ready for use, no waiting for glue to dry, and no messy drips.

Follow the procedure in the shop manual [you do have one, yes?] for putting the windshield and back glass in. The rubber gasket goes around the glass, some heavy cord goes all the way around the outside groove plus a little overlap, push the glass and rubber up to the the opening from inside the cab and have a helper (or two) start pulling the cord to the outside to put the gasket lip over the windshield frame.

Use lots of Windex as lubricant on the glass and rubber to help it move. A couple of wooden tongue depressors or popsicle sticks are useful to poke the rubber in place without scratching or chipping the glass.

An amendment to Gary's excellent guidance: the side windows go in before the vent windows. Also, most versions of the shop manual show the side windows being installed from the inside of the door. I have never been able to do it that way -- it's much easier from the outside of the door.

No - I totally agree. Installing the glass from outside the door is easier.[xx(][}]
