vacuum wiper motor

The wiper motor on my '50 Champion has two hose nipples on it. One has a tube going to the manifold, but there is nothing on the one that points toward the driver's side. Where does a tube go from there?

Ever since I got my Champion, the wiper motor has had a plug over the left (driver's side) pipe (port?) and it works ok (as well as those wipers ever do). I have no idea what that pipe is really used for, unless its a separate port that you would use to hook up the vacuum assist from the dual action fuel pumps.

Vacuum wiper motors often benefit from a shot of shutter-stat fluid to keep the seals swelled. Do not take this advice; see my later post!

Older vehicles (diesels, coaches and high-end autos) had grill panels that would open or close depending on coolant temperature. These were vacuum operated by shutter-stats.

Maybe there's a modern equivalent. Perhaps it's just light weight oil.

I suspect someone here actually knows more about it than I do. I know the shop where I work on my car has a very old can of shutter-stat fluid. If I remember to ask him, I'll post what info I can find on the can.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH VAC WIPERS WE ALWAYS WOULD TAKE THE INLET VAC HOSE LOOSE AND STICK IN CAN OF BRAKE FLUID THEN MOVE WIPER ARM BACK AND FORTH SUCKING SMALL AMOUNT OF FLUID INTO MOTOR. THIS SEEMS TO ALWAYS HELP THE SPEED.

Rob Ficken, of Ficken Auto Parts, on the internet as wiperman.com specializes in vacuum motors. I thought I would ask him about fluids to aid wiper motors. Here is his response in its entirety:

"NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Never sparay anything inside a vacuum wiper. The wiper is greased not oiled. The best way to keep it limber is to use it. Rob

I actually greased mine heavily with white lithium grease. Should I clean it all out and try it with something else? I don't want to hurt the baffle any more than it already is.
