Can you tell if a 63 Daytona was an original supercharged car strictly by the VIN number or would I need to order a build sheet?

JK - there is no indication on the VIN, other than it starting "63V" - but that could make it a little 259 as well. A production order will tell you how it came from the factory. There are also a few people who have a master list of all the R-series cars. It is kept out of the public eye to keep those less honest from taking a "lost R-series" car and creating their own - claiming it to be original. Good luck.

You can learn a little by the body plate number. There is a 1963 Daytona with a supercharged engine, that has recently been discussed here, that still had a body plate for a six cylinder car (that it was originally) when I last saw it.

There are telltale signs of an R car. One being the return line back to the tank, and the tank having the return line pipe on the upper left part of the tank.

Most folks making clones don't include that detail.

        Whatcha got?

I saw a car advertised and I have not looked at it yet. The guy is slow in getting back to me. It is only an hour away so I thought it would be worth looking at. I'll post info if I get to see it.

Does that mean the car was not supercharged at the factory? Or does that mean that we don't know if it was or not?

That means it was not originally built as a Jet Thrust (Avanti Powered R1 or R2) Lark, full package or not. Also, No "Supercharger".

I suspected it was not as there is no vacuum gauge in the dash nor a hole where one was. It is a convertible so I need to go look at it regardless.

Larks with Avanti engines do not have a vacuum gauge, even if it is an R2 supercharged car. I assume that is because there is no place to put one.

OK, so someone may have had one on it once. I'll look for signs under the hood Saturda when I look at it.

On a slightly related note... How does one go about getting a copy of this elusive R series “list”?
