Identify torque converter

    I think that one thing to consider and one that no one else mentioned is just what is appropriate for your application/driving habits.

    1. Considering that high stall converters drink more gas than do their low stall brothers that begin to engage almost immediately upon the application of the throttle. If you driving habits are jackrabbit get aways then the "H" converters are the ticket.

    2. If you favor good performance along with fuel economy, then the low stall converters are the ticket.

    As an example, I had a '64 Champ p/u where I purchased a 289/PowerShift combo out of a '63 GT. I ditched the HR in favor of a low stall converter and averaged 18-20MPG coupled with a 3.07 rear gear. The truck still had plenty of power when called for with the added benefit of a floor shifter with a modern shift pattern.

    But that's just me...

    "There should be an "H" or "HR" stamped on the front side of the converter if it is a Powershift converter. The standard converters may have an "FT" or "BB" and maybe some other letters. All the Powershift converters I have seen have either the "H" or "HR" on them.

    The standard converter should stall around 1800 with a 289 or about 1600 with a 259 and the Powershift at least 2100 but this will depend on how good the engine is. The more power your engine is putting out the higher the stall will be.

    The shop manual states the Avanti Torque Converter has a prefix of HR.

    The Avanti torque converter will work in the FOM. It just has a higher stall. I believe that the regular torque converter has suffix FT. The number of the teeth are the same.

    So it looks like I have a torque converter for an Avanti and a torque converter for a 1961-1964 6 cylinder. But not one for a 63 or 64 289!!! Can anyone tell me what identifiers I can use to spot the correct one? Number stamped on it and/or number of teeth?

    I believe a recount will show 151 teeth on the second converter. It is for a 12v six cylinder car. The FS model converter is for 1961-64 models and was painted purple and white originally.

    The BB suffix indicates a torque converter for the R1/R2 or JT/JTS Power Shift transmissions. The other torque converter, with fewer teeth, is likely from a 6 volt Stude if it is V8. I am sure someone else will chime in and confirm.

    Identify torque converter

    I am in the process of mating a torque converter to my recently (actually still in the process!!) full flow 63 (ish) 289. I have two torque coverters one needs more love than the other. One has 162 teeth with a number of F15343 on the ring and a number of 140879-BB on the converter body. The other has 153 teeth with no number on the ring ane a 30418-FS on the converter. The books don't list ANY of those numbers!! Can anyone help me identify which converter is which and what they were intended for?
